“There’s a Lot More to Come for PS4,” Says PlayStation Exec

Unlike Microsoft, who’re going with a cross-gen model that will see the Xbox One and Xbox Series X co-existing, Sony are sticking with their exclusives-driven traditional approach to console generations. And with major first party exclusives such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart having been confirmed for the PS5, it definitely seems like the company is devoting all its resources into ensuring that the PS5 has strong exclusive content on offer right off the bat.

But that doesn’t mean those sticking with the PS4 for the foreseeable future have nothing left to look forward to. The tail-end of the console has been defined by strong, memorable exclusive releases, including the likes of The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, but according to Eric Lempel, PlayStation’s head of worldwide marketing, there’s still plenty more to come.

Speaking in an interview with Geoff Keighley (which you can view in its entirety below), Lempel said that though the PS5 is going to be plenty of attention, the PS4 still has a lot of life left in it (transcribed by GamesRadar).

“PS4 is a big part of everything we do, and will continue to be a big part of everything we do,” Lempel said. “There’s a lot more to come for PS4. I think we’re seeing some of the greatest titles of this generation release in recent weeks, but that will continue. PS5 is the next generation product, but we’ve got a lot to come for people on PS4. There’s still a ton of life in that product.”

Whether Lempel is referring to major new first party exclusives, smaller releases, or cross-gen third party titles is unclear. Sony do have a history of releasing major exclusives on older consoles after newer hardware has launched- Gran Turismo 6, for instance, came out on PS3 after the PS4 had launched, while going further back, God of War 2 launched for the PS2 after the PS3 had hit the market.

That said, one would assume that the biggest studios in Sony’s first party portfolio have moved on to next-gen development. For instance, recent job listings seem to suggest that Naughty Dog are gearing up for work on a PS5 game- read more on that through here.
